Seven 2013 NHSCA Freshman National champs are back to defend their titles at the 25th Annual National High School Coaches Association High School National Wrestling Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Back-to-back titles put wrestlers halfway to joining the exclusive NHSCA 4X National Title Club.  Only three wrestlers have ever captured four NHSCA's. Last year B.J. Clagon of Toms River South High School in New Jersey joined Blake Roulo of Matoaca High School in Virginia and Tyler Beckwith of Greene High School in New York as the only four-time champs in the history of the event.

The 2014 NHSCA Sophomore Nationals field features 16 two-time state champs from around America. Three of those two-time state champs hail from Georgia - Jack Barber of Buford High School and twins Thomas and Daniel Bullard of Archer High School.

The Bullard boys have been been the talk of the Peach State over the last two year and they are back to defend their 2013 NHSCA Freshman Nationals titles.  Both wrestlers have also won back-to-back Georgia state championships.  This past season, Thomas was 60-1, while Daniel was 60-4.

As freshmen, Daniel owned a record of 58-5, Thomas was 54-7. The twins brother Sam, who is a junior, has finished as a state runner-up twice, plus a third place finish.  All three boys carry 4.0 GPA's.

At 120, two-time Florida state champ Kyle Norstrem of Brandon High School is back to add another gold medal to the trophy case.  Norstrem won the 2013 Freshman Nationals title at 113.

Defending 2013 NHSCA Freshman Nationals champ at 132, Chris Mauriello of Hauppauge High School New York is back at the same weight class as a sophomore.  Mauriello won the state's Division II title this year with a 48-1 mark.

At 138, Kevin Budock of Good Counsel will be going after a second straight NHSCA championship.  Budock won the 126-pound title last year.

The 195-pound weight class features 2013 Freshman Nationals champ Matthew Correnti of  Holy Cross High School in New Jersey. Correnti, who placed third in this year's New Jersey state championships, won the 182-pound NHSCA title last year.

At 285, Jack Beistel of Southmoreland High School in Pennsylvania is back to defend the title he won last year as a freshman.

Runner-ups from last year that are entered in the 2013 NHSCA Sophomore Nationals: Kellen Devlin (126) of Amherst High School in  New York, Ryan Peters (132) of Timberlane High School in New Hampshire Jimmy Saylor (138) of Easton High School in Pennsylvania, Dean Drugac (170) of Morris Knolls High School in New Jersey, Alan Clothier (170) of Lawrence High School in Kansas, Christian Araneo (182) of Melville High School in New York, Joe Hensley (285) of Archbishop Moeller in Ohio.

It's hard to handicap the 2014 NHSCA Junior Nationals because of the amount of talent that will descend upon Virginia Beach for the 25th Annual National High School Coaches Association's High School National Wrestling Championships.

From top-to-bottom, the NHSCA Junior Nationals are deep with talent.  There are 19 wrestlers entered that are three-time state champs (see below), plus a large number of wrestlers that have captured between one-and-two state championships.

There are also seven 2013 NHSCA Sophomore Nationals champs back to defend their titles as juniors.

At 120, three-time West Virginia state champ Jordan Allen from Huntington High School is looking for his second straight NHSCA gold medal.  Allen won the 113-pound gold in 2013.

At 152-pounds, last year's 145-pound champ Corbin Allen of Hanover High School in Virginia is looking to defend his NHSCA gold medal.  This past year, Allen won Virginia's Class 4A state title at 152-pounds.

Allen's main competition may come from three-time Maine state champ and defending 2013 NHSCA Sophomore Nationals champ Cody Hughes of Marshwood High School.  Hughes was 49-1 this past season and owns a lifetime record of 149-9.
Another three-time state champ entered in the 2014 Junior Nationals is Tevis Bartlett of Cheyenne East High School in Wyoming.  The 2013 Sophomore Nationals champ at 182 is entered at 195 this year.  Barlett, who also won the 2012 NHSCA Freshman Nationals at 182-pounds, was a perfect 46-0 this year and he's also Wyoming's top high school football players with Division I scholarship offers in football.

Like Bartlett, Kenneth Brinson of Marist High School in Georgia is looking for his third straight NHSCA gold medal. After winning freshman and sophomore titles at 195, Brinson moves-up to 220-pounds for the 2014 NHSCA Junior Nationals.

Awaiting Brinson in the 220-pound weight class is defending 2013 NHSCA Sophomore National champ Austin Myers of Campbell County High in Kentucky, who is also looking for his third straight NHSCA championship.  Myers has won three straight Kentucky state wrestling championships.

Benjamin Schram of Bellbrook High School in Ohio, who has also won two NHSCA gold medals and was last year's 160 NHSCA Sophomore Nationals champ, is up at 170-pounds this year. Making the trip east will east from Arizona will be Ryan Allred of Camp Verde High School in Arizona.  Allred, who is entered in the Junior Nationals at 138 pounds, is a three-time Arizona state champ, who has only lost one match in his high school career.

National High School Coaches Association celebrates 25 years of National Wrestling Championships

by Jeff Fisher
Host, NHSCA Sports Hour

25 years ago, National High School Coaches Association founder Bob Ferraro, Sr. had a dream – bring together all of the nation’s senior high school state wrestling champs.

“The day we left Lewisburg, Pennsylvania for the championships in the western part of the state, we had only 51 wrestlers registered,” said Ferraro, who at the time of the first national championships was the head wrestling coach at Bucknell University. “Back then there was no internet, so it was hard to tell if more kids would be coming or not. I’m thinking how bad will this be if only those 51 kids show-up?  The good news is we had a great turnout for on-site registration and we ended-up with 262 wrestlers from 39 different states.”

25 years later, Ferraro still enjoys talking about that first year in Pittsburgh, but he also smiles when discussing the NHSCA’s upcoming Silver Anniversary of the NHSCA High School National Wrestling Championships, March 27th through the 30th at the Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

A quarter-century since those first championships, the NHSCA has expanded, not only the championships, but also the organization as well.  Today, the National High School Coaches Association crowns championships in five different divisions – middle school, freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior classifications.

Each an every year, the number of wrestlers competing grows.  The 2013 championships attracted a record 2,800-plus wrestlers to Virginia Beach to battle for the coveted title of NHSCA high school national wrestling champ.  The top eight wrestlers in each weight class also earn the honor of NHSCA All-American.

The national championship alumni roster reads like a Who’s Who in the sport of wrestling with the likes of current Penn St. head coach Cael Sanderson, who won the NHSCA Senior Nationals in 1997 before going on to become a four-time NCAA champ with a 159-0 record.  Sanderson won an Olympic gold medal in 2004 in Athens, Greece.

Two other NHSCA Senior National champs went-on to win Olympic gold.  Jake Varner was a NHSCA Senior National champ in 2005 before going onto to become a two-time NCAA champ at Iowa St.  Varner won the 96 kg gold medal in the 2012 Olympic games in London.

2006 New Jersey’s Jordan Burroughs won an NHSCA National Championship before going to Nebraska where he won two NCAA titles.  Like Varner, Burroughs won a gold medal at the London Olympics.

Stephen Abas was a 1996 NHSCA Senior National champ.  Abas was a three-time NCAA champ at Fresno St.  Abas won an Olympic silver medal at the Athens Games.

“It’s always a lot of fun to watch our wrestlers move-on to have great success at the NCAA level,” said Ferraro.

The most exclusive club for the NHSCA’s is the elite four-time champion club.  There have only been three, quadruple champs – Blake Roulo of Matoaca High School in Virginia; Tyler Beckwith of Greene High School in New York; and BJ Clagon of Toms River South High School in New Jersey.

Kentucky High School Wrestler with Cerebral Palsy wins match on Senior Night

When you spend enough time in high school sports like I have, you come across many great, inspirational stories.

This one out of Kentucky tops them all, because as I watched the video and read the story of Willie Burton of Fairdale High School in Kentucky, I cried...no lie...you NEED to enjoy these two videos from the Courier-Journal.

To set the stage, Willie Burton has cerebral palsy.  He can't stand up, so he has to crawl on the mat, but that hasn't stopped him from being a wrestler on his high school team for the last four years.

Aside from forfeit victories, until last week's Senior Night, Willie had never won an actual match on the mat.  That all changed when he beat Sydney Smith of Pleasure Ridge Park High School with a 6-4 decision.

Below is video of the entire match.  Even if you aren't a fan of wrestling or if you don't understand the sport, you still need to watch this.

After you watch the video, check-out the story written by Adam Himmelsbach by clicking here.  You can also meet Willie in the video below.

The championship match of the 13th annual National High School Coaches Association Final Four Wrestling Festival between top-ranked Blair Academy (Blairstown, NJ) and #5 Wyoming Seminary (Kingston, PA) live-up to its billing and then some.

Blair, which has now won eight straight NHSCA Final Fours, edged the Blue Knights 27-24 in a dual meet that saw the nation’s #1 team in the country trail 21-15 heading into the final four matches at the York Expo Center in York, Pennsylvania.

Seminary took a 21-15 lead in the match after John Busiello defeated Zach Sherman 1-0 at 106 pounds.  Blair regained the lead on three consecutive wins at 113, 120 and 126.  Chas Tucker’s 11-3 major victory at 113 put Blair back in front 22-21.  Matt Kolodzik’s tech fall at 126 brought the match down to the final bout between Blair’s Alex Rinandi and Will Verallis of Seminary.

Verallis needed to pin Rinaldi to send the match to criteria, but all he could manage was a 2-0 decision, which ended an incredible day of wrestling with Blair remaining unbeaten with a 27-24 heart-stopping victory.

Neither Blair nor Wyoming Seminary had much trouble advancing to the championship match.  Blair beat Tunkhannock (Pennsylvania) 79-0 and Bishop McDevitt (Harrisburg, PA) 67-6 in pool matches, while Wyoming Seminary beat its pool opponents: Benton (Pennsylvania) 55-6, Pennsbury (Pennsylvania) 79-0 and East Stroudsburg South (Pennsylvania) 68-6.

Wyoming Seminary due a bye into the Final Four semifinals where the Blue Knights defeated Spring Grove (Pennsylvania) 62-3 to advance to the championship.  Blair beat Bermudian Springs (Pennsylvania) 57-12 in the quarterfinals and then topped Wyoming Valley West (Pennsylvania) 59-6 to set-up the showdown with Seminary.

The pool champs were: Bermudian Springs, Blair Academy, DePaul Catholic (NJ), Spring Grove, Wyoming Seminary and Wyoming Valley West.

I'm really looking forward to this Thursday's NHSCA Sports Hour interview with America's winningest high school wrestling coach Scot Davis, who is three victories away from his 1,000th coaching win.

Davis, who is in his first year at Eden Prairie (Minnesota), is currently three wins away from the magical mark, and barring an upset or two against Spring Lake Park and Cooper, he stands a good chance of getting #1000 on Friday night against Columbia Heights.

This past weekend, Christopher Columbus (Florida) head coach Jim Husk moved into second place on the all-time dual meet victories list.  Husk entered the season tied with Russ Riegel, who retired at the end of the 2011 season.
