Dave Dean named NHSCA National Wrestling Coach of the Year

by Jeff Fisher

Dave Dean of Lowell High School in Michigan is the 2014 NHSCA National High School Wrestling Coach of the Year.

In nine years as the head coach at Lowell, Dean has built the Red Arrows program into one of the best in Michigan while also gaining attention on the national level.  This past season, Dean led his program to its second overall Michigan’s Division 2 team championship, plus a Top 20 ranking by multiple national media outlets.  Three of his wrestlers – Lucas Hall (112 pounds), Max Dean (171 pounds) and Josh Colegrove (215 pounds) – won individual state championships this past season.

With three state champs this past season, Dean has now coached 12 individual state champs along with 46 state place winners while amassing an overall record of 237-39.  Under Dean, Lowell has won nine Michigan district titles, six regional championships and seven conference titles.  This past year, Dean was named Michigan Division 2 Coach of the Year.

Maybe more impressive than his on-the-mat record, is the fact that since 2007, every Lowell wrestling team has been named Academic All-State.

“Coach Dean and his family have set a level of excellence in Michigan and the nation that makes Lowell High School one of the top programs each year,” said Bob Ferraro, Junior, Executive Director of the National High School CoachesAssociation. “We are proud to honor Coach Dean not only for his work on the mat, but also his drive to turn-out top quality student-athletes.”

“My very first thought is to thank all of the coaches, athletes, parents and administrators that have shared in all of the work and sacrifice over the years,” said Coach Dean. “Without the backing of all of those people, a recognition like this would be possible.  On behalf of them, I am truly honored to receive this prestigious recognition from the NHSCA.”

This past season was Dean’s last at Lowell.  He has accepted the job as the head of the Olympic Development Program at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Dean’s son Gabe just finished his freshman year wrestling for the Big Red.  Gabe Dean finished third at 184-pounds at the recently completed NCAA National Championships.  Earlier this year, Dean beat Penn State’s Ed Ruth two stop the two-time champs 84-match win streak.  Ruth gained revenge at the NCAA’s, beating Dean in the semifinals before going on to win his third NCAA title.

Dave Dean was a two-time All-American while wrestling at the University of Minnesota, that included a runner-up finish at the NCAA’s.  He was also a two-time Big 10 champ.

Next year, Coach Dean will have seven former student-athletes wrestling at the Division 1 level.

Last year in the 106-pound freshman final, Tapia was pinned by Tyler Warner from Ohio.

Danny Bertoni of Middletown High School in Maryland won his first competitive wrestling match when he was four years old.  Earlier this month, Bertoni won the Maryland 2A-1A 106-pound title with a perfect 44-0 record.

He found himself down 3-0 to Noah Kile of Blessed Trinity after two periods in the finals.  After battling back to tie match at 3-3, Kile escaped to take a 4-3 led with 20 seconds to go.  Hartley captured the gold by taking down Kile with 0.8 seconds left on the clock.  Hartley's overall record for the 2013-14 season was 48-12.

There's no better way to cap a high school wrestling career than by winning an NHSCA Senior Nationals Championship.

The 25th Annual NHSCA High School National Wrestling Championships will feature 203 wrestlers from 41 different states, plus Germany that won high school state championships during the 2013-14 school year.

Overall the Senior Nationals feature nine, four-time state champs; 17 three-time champs; and 64 two-time state champs.

All eyes will be on Ryan Millhof (126 pounds) of Collins Hill High School in Georgia and Clay Walker (138 pounds) of Eastside High School in South Carolina as they try to become only the fourth and fifth four-time NHSCA champions.

Millhof, who is a three-time Georgia state champ, and Walker, a four-time South Carolina state champ, are looking to join Tyler Beckwith of Greene High School in New York, B.J. Clagon of Toms River South High School in New Jersey and Blake Roulo of Matoaca High School in Virginia as four-time NHSCA champions.

Millhof, who will wrestle at the University of Oklahoma next year, is ranked #7 in the nation at 126 pounds.  This past season Millhof finished 65-3 to give him an overall high school record of 239-7.

Walker won the 2013 NHSCA Junior Nationals at 132 pounds.  Walker is second on South Carolina's all-time wins list with 251 wins and only 10 losses.  This past season he won South Carolina's 3A title with a 70-1 record.  As a junior, Walker set the state's all-time single-season wins record with 72 victories.

Right now the 132-pound weight class is loaded with four, four-time state champs: Dusty Hone of Cedar High School in Utah, Bryce Meredith of Cheyenne Central High School in Wyoming, Christian Monserrat of Methuen High in Massachusetts and Trevor Schermer of Brusly High School in Louisiana. Hone is ranked #19 in the country at 132.

The wrestlers entered in the 132-pound weight class have won a combined 52 state titles during their careers.

The 152-pound weight class has two four-time state champs with Hayden Ryals of Southside in Alabama and John Van Slooten, Jr. of Summerville High in South Carolina entered.

Other four-time state champs in the field are: Brandon Womack (160 pounds) of Scottsboro High in Alabama, Chance McClure of Commerce High in Georgia and Jesse Webb (285 pounds) of Mt. Anthony Union High School in Vermont.

McClure is back to defend his 2013 Junior Nationals title that he won at 195 pounds.  This year McClure, who will attend the University of Virginia, is entered at 220-pounds. He finished his high school career with 185 straight wins.  McClure, who won four straight Georgia Class A titles, sports an overall high school mark of 191-2 and is ranked a high as #3 in the country at 220 pounds.

The 160-pound weight class will be very interesting with Womack and two-time New York state champ Burke Paddock of Warsaw High School entered.

Womack, who finished second at the 2013 Junior Nationals at 152 pounds, is ranked #12 in the nation at 160.  Womack tied the Alabama record for state championships when he won his sixth consecutive title in February.  His high school record is an incredible 422-8 with five of this loses coming as a 7th grader.  327 of his matches ended with a pin.

Womack finished his high school career with a perfect 77-0 record, which is a record for the most victories in a season without a loss.

In 2012, Womack, who will attend Cornell, set the state record for wins in a season with 85.

Paddock, who will attend the University of Iowa, finished his high school career with a second straight New York Division II title, winning the 170-pound title.  Paddock finished 55-0 this season while breaking the state record for lifetime victories.  He's currently ranked #17 in the country at 170-pounds.

The Paddock brothers have been regulars at the NHSCA's through the years.  As a family, the Paddocks own over 1,000 high school wrestling victories.

Entered at 285 is Webb, who is ranked #13 in the nation. Webb won NHSCA titles as a freshman and sophomore at 285.  Last year Webb finished 5th in the Junior Nationals.

2013 Junior National champ Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer of Cheektiowaga High School in New York is looking for his second straight NHSCA title.  This year, Rodriguez-Spencer will wrestle at 145 pounds.
