The National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA)
today announced its selections as National High School Coaches of the Year for
2013.
It is the 14th year
straight year the NHSCA has honored these achievers in the high school coaching
community nationwide. This year’s recipients, selected in a total of 20 boys
and girls sports, are from 17 different states. Two come from California,
Michigan and Texas with 14 states claiming one honoree each.
While these coaches
represent a multitude of different backgrounds, they exhibit a common theme: a
strong dedication to supporting and developing high school student-athletes.
Each one of the honorees will be honored in the National High School Sports Hall of Fame Museum that the NHSCA will be building in Easton, Pennsylvania.
Following are the NHSCA’s
selections as National High School Coaches of the Year, along with a list of
past winners.
2013
NHSCA National Baseball Coach of the Year
Phil
Clark – Bartlett High School, Bartlett, Tennessee
Phil Clark, who has been a head baseball coach for over
30 years at three high schools in Tennessee, has won over 900 games during an
illustrious career. The state’s all-time wins leader came to Bartlett in 2003
and led the school to its first state title in 2007. In all, his teams have won
five Tennessee state baseball titles.
This past season, Clark guided his team to a 26-11 record. Clark is a member of the Tennessee
Baseball Coaches Association and National High School Baseball Association’s
Hall of Fames.

NHSCA National Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year
Tony
Harper – Montwood High School, El Paso, Texas
Tony Harper is the 2012 National High School Coaches
Association’s National High School Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year after
becoming the fourth boys’ basketball coach in America to win 900 wins during
the 2012-13 school year. Harper,
who led Montwood to a 27-6 record this past season, ended the year with 908
lifetime victories. Harper, who
took-over at Montwood in 1990, was
named the University Interscholastic League’s Texas Boys’ Basketball Coach of
the Year in 2011. In April, Harper
resigned at Montwood to take the head coaching job at Cathedral High
School.

NHSCA National Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year
Miner
Webster – Highland High School, Gilbert, Arizona
Miner Webster is the 2012 National High School Coaches
Association’s National High School Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year after
leading Highland to a 32-3 record, which put him one victory away for playing
for a possible ninth Arizona state championship. This past season, Webster won his 700th game as a
girls’ head basketball coach and finished the year with an all-time mark of
712-107 with stops at Highland and Gilbert High Schools. Before becoming a girls’ head coach,
Webster also the head coach of the boys’ basketball team at Parker High
School. Webster is second on
Arizona’s all-time girls’ basketball coaching victories list behind Don
Petranovich, who retired with 778 wins.

NHSCA National Boys’ Cross Country Coach of the Year
Jeff
Morris, Perham High School, Perham, Minnesota
This past season Perham cross-country Head Coach
Jeff Morris led the Yellowjackets to a state meet record 37-points and 16:16
team average to claim the MSHSL Division A State Team Championship. The
following week the Minnesota small school came within 10-points of 3rd place at
NXN Heartland and being eligible for an at-large berth for Nike Cross
Nationals. The Perham boys team was awarded the Division II National Team
Championship as the top school in the nation with a total enrollment less than
500 students while also being ranked #26 overall.

NHSCA National Girls’ Cross Country Coach of the Year
Jeff
Devantier, Birmingham Seaholm, Birmingham, Michigan
This past season Seaholm HS, Birmingham, Michigan
cross country Head Coach Jeff Devantier led the Lady Maples to a first-ever
MHSAA Division I State Team Championship. Featuring three top 10 nationally
ranked teams including then US#1 Grosse Pointe South HS, Grosse Pointe Farms,
MI and US#5 Saline HS, Saline, MI; the Division I team championship was the
most competitive state championship in the nation. While claiming the state
team championship Seaholm HS also claimed a share of the National Team
Championship and finished the 2012 cross country season ranked US#1.

NHSCA National Field Hockey Coach of the Year
Eileen
Donahue, Watertown High School, Watertown, Massachusetts
Donahue ended the 2012 season by guiding Watertown to
its 13th Massachusetts state field hockey championship, which was
also the school’s 92nd straight game without a loss; going 90-0-2
during the streak. The win streak
is tied for the fourth longest all-time in America. In her 27th year as head coach of the program,
Watertown finished a perfect 23-0 in 2012 while wining the MIAA Division 2
title. Donahue’s lifetime record
is 528-30-45.

NHSCA National Football Coach of the Year
J.T.
Curtis – John Curtis Christian School, River Ridge, Louisiana
J.T. Curtis is the 2012 National High School Coaches
Association’s National High School Football Coach of the Year after leading the
school founded by his father John to its 25th Louisiana high school
football championship in 2012. The
Patriots also were crowned “mythical” national champs by multiple national
media outlets. Since taking-over the John Curtis program, Curtis has become
America’s second winningest coach with 520 victories. 2009 NHSCA National
Football Coach of the Year John McKissick of Summerville High School in South
Carolina is the all-time leader with 601 victories. Coach Curtis’ record is 520-54-6. The amassing thing about
his record is that Curtis’ first team in 1969 didn’t win a game going 0-10.

Jim Jacobsen has had an incredible 31-year career as the
boys’ head golf coach at Bergen Cathoic.
The 2012-13 season saw Jacobsen win his 900th match. Jacobsen’s career record is 917-31-1,
which he attributes to both luck and strategy.

Jodi Schoeck
– Barrington High School, Barrington, Illinois
Barrington High School head coach Jodi Schoeck, a member
of the Illinois Coaches Association Hall of Fame, just completed her 26th
season as the leader of the Fillies program. She has guided the Fillies to 11 league titles and 12
Illinois regional titles Under Schoeck, Barrington has appeared nine times in
the state finals. Schoeck’s 1996
team finished third in the state.

NHSCA National Boys Soccer Coach of the Year
Paul
Rose, Jesuit High School, Sacramento, CA
Paul Rose has been the head boys’ soccer coach at Jesuit
High School since 1979 and during that time he’s become the winningest (684
victories) high school soccer coach in California. In 2011 he was named to the California Coaches Association
Hall of Fame. This past season, Rose led his team to a #2 overall national
ranking, finishing with a record of 27-1-1. During his tenure, Jesuit has
finished #1 in the nation three times (2003, 2008, 2011).

Drake – Trinity Catholic HS, St. Louis, Missouri
Trinity Catholic’s (formerly St. Thomas Aquinas) Vince
Drake is a legend in high school soccer, becoming the first coach in America to
win 1,000 games as girls’ and boys’ soccer coach. Drake passed the 1,000 win plateau in 2011. Drake has led
the girls’ program to one state title and the boys’ soccer program to 10
Missouri state championships.

Robert
Earl Radford – Northern High School, Ownings, Maryland
Robert Earl Radford has built Northern High School in
softball powerhouse. In 2013,
Radford’s team was ranked #1 by MaxPreps.com after winning its sixth straight
Maryland state softball title. The Patriots finished 23-0, extending their win
streak to 76 straight without a loss.

NHSCA National Boys’ Swimming Coach of the Year
Kevin Kinel
– Chesterton High School, Chesterton, Indiana
Kevin Kinel has been the head coach at Chesterton for
over three decades. The 2012-13 school year was another great one as his
Trojans won four individual events and two relay gold medals on the way to the
school’s third Indiana state championship in the last six years. In his career, Kinel has produced 53
first-team All-Americans and three Olympic Trial qualifiers. This year, he was also named Coach of
the Year by the Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association.

Nick Frasersmith
– Regis Jesuit, Aurora, Colorado
Nick Frasersmith has been on the staff at Regis Jesuit
since the mid-80’s, taking over the girls’ swim program in 2003. This past
season, Frasersmith led his school to its second Colorado 5A state championship
in three years. One of Frasersmith’s
biggest challenges this year was managing the senior year of Olympic gold
medalist Missy Franklin, who returned to the pool to close out her high school
career after an incredible summer performance at the 2012 London Summer
Olympics.

NHSCA National Boys’ Tennis Coach of the Year
Tony Splendore,
Mt. Pleasant High School, Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania
Tony Splendore has been the boys’ and girls’ tennis
coach at Mt. Pleasant High School in western Pennsylvania for 39 years. With well-over 600 victories, Splendore
is one of the winningest boys’ tennis coaches in Pennsylvania. Splendore’s
started the school’s tennis program in 1972 when it had no home tennis courts,
meaning the school had to play every match on the road. This past year, Splendore, who is
retired from teaching, returned to the sidelines as the boys’ head basketball
coach.

Romeo, The Miami Valley School, Dayton, Ohio
For 42 years, Vin Romeo has pulled double duty as the
head coach of the girls’ and boy’s tennis teams at The Miami Valley
School. He started both programs
over four decades ago. This past
season, Coach Romeo was saluted as Ohio’s all-time wins leader with over 600
victories for each program.

Steele, North Rowan High School, Spencer, North Carolina
Robert Steele has had an incredible career at North
Rowan that has seen him win 15 NCHSAA state championship, including a runner-up
finish this past season. From 1994 through 1998, North Rowan won five straight
state championships. He’s a member
of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

June Villers,
DeSoto High School, DeSoto, Texas
June Villers, a DeSoto alum, has build the Eagles into
one of Texas’ top programs over the last decade. This past year, DeSoto won its third straight Texas Class 5A
girls’ title. The state championship was the fourth overall for Villers’ team,
including runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2010. During her time as head coach, she’s coached nationally-ranked
athletes in the 4X400, long jump, triple jump, discus, shot put, 4X100, 100m
hurdles, 300m hurdles and 400m.

– Delton Kellogg School, Delton, Michigan
2012 saw Magelssen add to his national record for
victories by leading Delton Kellogg School to the Michigan Class B state
semifinals. Magelssen is America’s
all-time winningest volleyball coach with 1,803 victories.

Steve Tirapelle
– Clovis High School, Clovis, California
Steve Tirapelle led Clovis High to its third straight
California state wrestling championship during the 2012-13 season, plus a lofty
national ranking. Tirapelle has spent 30 years as a head high school wrestling
coach, the last 16 being at Clovis High where he’s led the school to 11 state
titles. During his illustrious
career as a head coach, Tirapelle has coached 80 state medalists and 19 state
champions.
